A high school student who believes himself to be the reincarnation of the titular communist revolutionary, writer/director Jacob Tierney’s deft comedic touch makes this enjoyable. The Trotksy stars Montreal’s own Jay Baruchel, late of Knocked Up and Tropic Thunder, as Leon, a 17-year old student who lives a life of privilege. He’s also delusional, convinced that his life is destined to follow Trotsky’s. After leading a strike at his father’s factory, Leon is cut off from (some) of his family’s money, and is forced to attend public school. Within about 24 hours, he’s organizing his own revolution. Baruchel plays the role so well, and so likeably, that it’s difficult to find much fault. And Tierney’s script is remarkably tight, spicing up occasionally familiar plot twists and tropes with dialogue that feels fresh without being insufferably hip. Go see it. --Montreal Gazette
