MetaCriticRotten Tomatoes

At a time when survival is often confused with heroism, “Stronger” emerges as a fresh and unexpected look at the life of an everyday guy who struggles with both in the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. It’s based on the real-life story of Jeff Bauman, whose legs were amputated after the terrorist blast and who later helps identify one of the bombers. Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of the painful and frightening struggle to recover and get his life back feels jarringly real. Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) as the ex-girlfriend Bauman was trying to win back by surprising her at the marathon finish, matches Gyllenhaal beat for authentic beat. Director David Gordon Green balances drama and dark humour. Miranda Richardson is outstanding as Bauman’s rough-edged mother. But this is Gyllenhaal’s film and he deserves every accolade. --Toronto Star

“A movie you need to see, no matter how much you think you don't need to see it.” --Chicago Tribune

There's a raw, tangible humanity to nearly every scene that sets the film gratifyingly apart. Entertainment Weekly
Transcends your standard inspirational drama mostly through two fantastic performances, but also in the way it understands that trauma isn't inspirational to the people who suffer it.
Cast Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, Miranda Richardson
