It’s hard to believe that the movie that spawned a generation of “As if”-uttering, plaid-skirt-wearing Cher Horowitzes is turning 27. The small-budget, Jane Austen-inspired teen movie, the brainchild of Fast Times at Ridgemont High director Amy Heckerling, debuted on July 19, 1995 — launching the careers of Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd.—Susannah Calahan

Like The Breakfast Club was to the ’80s, Mean Girls was to the ’00s and Lady Bird will probably be to the ’10’s, Clueless is perhaps the most iconic pop-cultural artifact of the ’90s high school drama movies. The movie offers a romanticized sneak peek into the lives of high school students during the flip phone-laden, spaghetti-strap-covered era and, for that reason, Clueless has earned its rightful place in the cult film genre.—Thomas Moran

“Silverstone is a winner. And so is the movie, which also functions as a lunatic update of Emma, the 1816 Jane Austen novel. Go ahead, laugh. Heckerling wants us in on the joke.”—Rolling Stone
