The latest from Wes Anderson unfurls like the best candy-colored atomic-bomb-era diorama ever. We go way out West circa 1955, to a fictional desert town hosting an annual Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. After a UFO sighting, the government quarantines the witnesses. Temporarily trapped in amber are a vibrant cast of kooky characters, including a widowed photographer (a touching Jason Schwartzman) and his brainiac teen scientist son and three daughters. There’s also his disapproving father-in-law (Tom Hanks, fitting in everywhere as he always does), a passing movie star (a glamorous Scarlett Johansson), the aforementioned alien (Jeff Goldblum) and a large supporting cast that includes Rupert Friend; Steve Carell, Jeffrey Wright and Tilda Swinton. —T.M.A.
