Almost overnight, the BlackBerry changed the way the world works. And now we have Canadian cinema’s answer to The Social Network. This is a relentlessly live-wire film: BlackBerry is funny, fast and nerve-rattling. And it is always intensely entertaining. Kicking off in 1996, the film follows a mechanical genius named Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and his best friend Doug Fregin (played by director Matt Johnson) who are trying to find investors for their tiny Waterloo, Ont., company. Enter: the shark. Harvard grad Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) takes control. But Lazaridis soon finds out what his new business partner already knows too well – that innovation requires sacrifice. Shot as if captured by hidden cameras, the film has an air of DIY guerrilla naturalism. You’re pulled in.—The Globe and Mail
