He’s so young he can barely shave, but he’s old enough to hustle even wizened professionals out of their cash in the rough areas of 1950s Manhattan.
As played by Timothée Chalamet in “Marty Supreme,” he is an instinctive overreacher, a fake-it-till-you-make it type. But this hustler doesn’t play cards or dice. His game is table tennis, and like his pingpong balls, he practically bounces off the walls. Chalamet once said he wants to be “one of the greats.” His Marty feels the same way. Based partially on the life story of Marty Reisman, the 1958 and 1960 U.S. men’s singles champion who dominated the New York table tennis scene for decades, “Marty Supreme” is yet another triumph for Chalamet and co-writer and director Josh Safdie-SF Chronicle
“Timothee Chalamet ping pongs to greatness in Josh Safdie’s whooshing wonder of a film about winning at all costs. And in case you’re wondering: This is the wildest damn thing Chalamet has ever put on screen.”-The Travers Take
